One West 30A Closure Has a Reopening Plan. The Other Has a Master Plan.

In a WJHG report, Pat Miller said, "Realistically, we expect it could be at least six months, and even that may be optimistic."

The remarks came after a kitchen fire tore through the second floor of Goatfeathers Seafood Market on August 12, 2026. About five weeks later, Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club's announcement used a word Miller never did. As of September 2026, Vue on 30a is "permanently closed."

Both places sat on the western stretch of County Highway 30A. Both have been around for decades: Goatfeathers since 1988, and the Vue's site since 1971, when it opened as the Beach Club before later becoming Vue on 30a. They also closed for very different reasons, and those reasons decide how long the hole in a Santa Rosa Beach routine will last. One closure sets you back on the Friday fish run for a few months. The other changes where you book an anniversary dinner, and nobody has said for how long.

What the record actually says

Goatfeathers Seafood Market Vue on 30a
What happened Kitchen fire on August 12, 2026, ruled accidental Board closed it after building problems were found
Official word Closed "at least six months," with a commitment to "rebuild and reopen" "Permanently closed"
Earliest stated return No date; six months from the fire is mid-February 2027 at the earliest None announced
What comes next The owner intends to rebuild the same business The building was already slated for replacement under the club's long-range beachfront master plan
Open since 1988 1971, first as the Beach Club

South Walton Fire District crews arrived at Goatfeathers just before 11 a.m. and found heavy fire on the second floor. They worked to keep the roof and second floor from collapsing, and nobody was hurt. Investigators with the fire district and the State Fire Marshal's Office said early findings pointed to an accidental kitchen fire, and the business was significantly damaged.

The Vue's case is different. The club says routine maintenance led to an outside assessment, which found water intrusion and related indoor air quality problems in parts of the building. The problems could have been fixed, but only with "a significant financial investment and an extended timeline." The building was already slated for replacement, so the board chose not to make that investment. The decision was made out of caution for members, guests and staff.

Goatfeathers has been through a long closure before

Six months sounds long until you look at the company's own history. Goatfeathers opened on May 19, 1988 as Over The Market Restaurant and took the Goatfeathers name in 1989. Its history also describes the stretch after the 331 bridge was lost in 1990. The business was closed at least six months that time, and it took about two years to get back to normal operations. That earlier closure says nothing about how long this rebuild will take. It does show that this business has reopened after a long shutdown before.

The harder part landed on the staff. Steven Tilleros organized a Fellowship 30A Church fundraiser for Goatfeathers employees on August 21, 2026. The page notes that the fire cost people their jobs at the end of the vacation season, when few other jobs were open. Proceeds go straight to a representative of the affected employees, and when last checked the fund had passed half of its $28,000 goal. The Fellowship 30A fundraiser for Goatfeathers staff is still open.

Goatfeathers is also bigger than the building near Gulfview Heights. The brand's online-order page links pickup at a Seagrove Market location on East County Highway 30A and at Goatfeathers at 30Avenue, at the corner of Highway 98 and Scenic Highway 30A in Inlet Beach. When last checked, both online ordering pages said they were not taking orders, which doesn't confirm whether either store is open for walk-in business. Call before you drive over.

Where the fish counter run goes until then

Dropping by a market on the way home and picking out fish for dinner is the part of the routine that's easiest to replace this fall. These markets are all within driving distance. None of them has posted a 2026 update we could confirm, so call before relying on posted hours.

  • Shrimper's Seafood Market, 4444 US-98, Santa Rosa Beach. Posted hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
  • Buddy's Seafood Market, 5231 East County Highway 30A in the Seagrove area. It's a retail market with a takeout steam bar.
  • Market 30A, 13063 US-98 E, Inlet Beach. It's a much longer drive east, with daily posted hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

If you went to Goatfeathers to sit down for fried fish rather than shop the case, Seagrove Village Market Café at 2976 South Highway 395 has posted a 2026 menu and serves seafood seven days a week. Stinky's Fish Camp at 5960 West County Highway 30A posts seafood menus, online ordering and hours on its website, though the site itself carries no date.

The Vue's gap is the longer one

The Vue is harder to replace because nobody has said what will stand on that spot or when. The club's beach club address is 4801 West County Highway 30A, on the Gulf. On July 16, 2026, two months before the closure, the club held a members-only town hall. It presented three early architect concepts for the Vue and the Beach Club, which grew out of member focus groups and surveys. Planning for a replacement was already underway before the water problems turned up.

Beyond those preliminary concepts shown to members, the club has publicly released no final design, construction schedule or reopening date, and no temporary dining plan for the Vue. Online comments have floated rebuild timelines, but none come from the board. Until the club says otherwise, treat the Vue's return as undated. The club's contact page lists hours for Schoony's 19th Hole at the golf clubhouse, but the club doesn't describe it as a stand-in for the Vue.

The club's own letter lists what happened in that dining room: "anniversaries and rehearsal dinners, sunset toasts and Sunday lunches, first dates and fiftieth ones." For this fall, those dinners will happen somewhere else on the western half of 30A.

  • Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar, 1875 South County Highway 393, Gulf Place. It advertises panoramic Gulf views and won 2026 30A Hot Spot recognition.
  • Renaissance French Restaurant, 118 Spires Lane, Santa Rosa Beach. In June 2026, the Pensacola News Journal reported that the 30A location is still open and serving its traditional French menu.
  • AJ's Grayton Beach, 63 DeFuniak Street. It has posted "Fall Hours 2026" and an October music schedule.
  • Hurricane Oyster Bar & Grill, 37 Logan Lane #4, Grayton Beach, a 2026 30A Hot Spot happy hour winner.
  • The Red Bar, 70 Hotz Avenue, Grayton Beach. Its online menu is active and it has a fall jazz schedule posted.

The October dates on west 30A's calendar

These are the dated events on the calendar between now and early November:

  1. Thursday, October 1. The Red Bar Jazz Band plays The Red Bar in Grayton Beach. SoWal's calendar lists another date on Tuesday, November 3.
  2. Tuesdays from October 6, 6 p.m. German Nights at Down Island Gulf Seafood Restaurant, 2780 US-98, Santa Rosa Beach, with a three-course dinner.
  3. Sunday, October 25. Shunk Gulley's 30A Oyster Festival at the Gulley Amphitheater at Gulf Place, with an oyster tasting competition, a shucking contest, a kids' area and live music.

The Oyster Festival is the one tied most closely to this fall's news. Proceeds go to the Walton County Sheriff's Office and the South Walton Fire District. The fire district sent the crews that fought the Goatfeathers fire on August 12. In his statement, Miller says they kept someone on site around the clock until the property was secure. The festival page doesn't give a year, but October 25 falls on a Sunday in 2026. Check Shunk Gulley's page closer to the day.

The six-month mark for Goatfeathers comes in mid-February 2027. Miller has already said that may be optimistic, and he has promised updates as work moves along. The Vue's replacement falls under the club's long-range beachfront master plan, and so far the only designs have been the preliminary concepts shown to members in July.
